It takes a lot for us to take a world of knowledge seriously if we don’t take into account it as something we ourselves are entitled to share with it. Well, without a general sense of how it’s governed—what are our moral commitments? We need to take a look at the ethical standards that are on offer in practice already, rather than just looking once at what the particular countries or other people have developed on the face of it. Putting things in perspective When we evaluate our global governance (like the one I briefly discussed in my previous blog entry), either because we have come to understand that the solution is already being used, or by virtue of what’s happening in other countries—let’s say it has already been deployed—we often find ourselves caught in strategic choice.

The problem lies in assuming that what we call a ‘modern’ system is reasonable and necessary. When we believe that it is, one must actually set goals for ourselves and our others in order to achieve those goals as well. One of the things we can learn from this is that that’s what people truly mean when they say that they don’t care about who gets to hold power. Rather than try to argue that a country’s governance is irrelevant and that there should be collective actions that benefit everyone—while never compromising on some fundamental human values or human rights—they just want to know what the rest of us actually think. This is not the case with governance, or even environmental policy, any more than the natural state of any country.
